Sarasota sits on Sarasota Bay, a lagoon on Florida’s Gulf coast, and the barrier islands across the bay are most of the reason to come: Lido Key and St. Armands Key are inside the city limits, and so is part of Siesta Key, where Siesta Beach is. Off the sand, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, home to the Circus Museum, and Marie Selby Botanical Gardens are the two stops. The airport, Sarasota–Bradenton International, is three miles north of downtown Sarasota and an Allegiant operating base.
Allegiant flies Indianapolis to Sarasota nonstop, and the airport’s route map lists it as year-round. The nonstop is also the cheap fare: Allegiant sold from $130 round trip, for ten days leaving December 14, and $131 for a week leaving January 9. The cheapest connection we read was Delta, through Atlanta or Detroit, at $267 on both of those sets of dates, and United through Chicago was $277 in January. On the March dates Allegiant was $177, Delta and United were $439, and Southwest flew it nonstop at $499.
